The B8 S4 motor is the same in that the chains are in the back. That said I haven't heard of a single issue yet on the B8s. The B7s seemed to be better then the B6 as they revised parts in the timing system and I am assuming that carried over to the B8. Current: 2021 SQ5. Previous: 2017 S3.

If you had warranty coverage the parts cost could be a great deal more since there's some bolts, hardware, and the lower timing chain cover that would need to be replaced too. Valve cover gaskets needs to be replaced over time. 100k+ miles sounds about right. The upper timing chain cover has a rubber gasket sealing it. It's chains not belts, so yes there is oil in that chamber. It's not particularly hard to get off to replace the gasket if it's started leaking air in or oil out.
Mine failed at 105k miles and my mechanic said he thinks the valves are bent as well. The issue appeared one evening when the car had trouble starting, was shaking a lot, and couldn’t even make it down the block. The cost to pull apart the engine, replace the valves, and replace the timing chain is expected to cost $5000-6000.
But if you plan to DIY, we would advise going with a timing chain kit to replace everything related to the timing chain such as tensioners, guides, and more.
