Also, as @Danikat.8537 pointed out, you already have to buy into the expansions to get skyscale as it is now, and if anything, unlocking skyscale with just SoTO is actually cheaper. If anything, I think Anet is touting the skyscale as just a higher-profile "hey guys we're giving you something a lot of you complained about" move.
Don't get the warclaw WvW skin, then, I guess. That's a base 200g to unlock, and there's no way around it by having mats already saved up. Or, I guess, don't exchange gold->gems for mount skins the way we've had to for years.
I assume I wasn't the only a bit distressed by the amount of stardust needed to complete all the weapon collections in Amnytas. Don't fret ! While events have their own additional benefits (exp, achievements and so on), eating magic orbs on skyscale is actually much more effective to get stardust quickly. Going back to quality of SotO contents, I think the major contents (rifts and metas) are such a huge step backwards for the game. It's just a lazy copy and paste. For rifts, all 3 tiers are exactly the same. For the first phase, I mindlessly kill enemies that randomly spawn all over the place until the bar fills up.
Skyscale Unlock: Return to guide. I saw a great guide on how to complete all the "Return to" achievements to get the map currency required but I cannot for the life of me find it again. I didnt bookmark the page. The Wiki isn't that great for this as the guide I saw just mentioned the easiest of the objectives to do to get the map currency.

Springer is the only mount that is almost obsolete when you get a skyscale Skimmer, Roller Bettle and Griffon are still top tier mounts (if you're not using skyscale and griffon as a combo in air, you're missing out. Skyscale feels like a turtle compared to griffon) Jackal/Raptor are also good in many circumstances Warclaw for WvW
